Animators build the world of Space Cadet by hand, from paper maquettes to origami starsEDITED VIDEO9m85HIGH
A crew member builds miniature maquettes by hand from paper, cardboard and wood so the materials and textures show, and another builds a quick sketch model of Robot and Celeste's apartment to photograph it from angles and plan the shots. A story artist draws loose, rough thumbnails for each scene on paper storyboard templates with Eric, the film's director, and the team brings in John Ng to storyboard the action and fighting scenes.

A speaker says his mother once folded a hexahedron from a single strip of paper with no glue, rulers or tape, which changed his relationship with paper, and a speaker says the handmade sets were meant to give the film a soft, almost emotional feel. In a scene, Robot sits Celeste at the dining table and teaches her to fold origami stars under a ceiling covered in them.

Eric recalls his grandmother's death and says writing a book carried him through that grief while he awaited the arrival of his first daughter. A collaborator explains how Eric's mother, a resourceful woman, made collage sketchbooks from newspaper and leftover cuttings, and Eric shows one of his earliest scrapbooks bound in a Safeway grocery bag, pointing out the stars in his drawings.

A speaker argues Robot's final memory is a fever dream, a collection of memories and feelings rather than something that really happened, and that the robot character represents all of those people.
