# Write clip hooks and captions with ChatGPT or Claude

Live clipping briefs fix much of a caption before you write it: 25% of 561 briefs we read ask for an @mention of the brand and 4% for a tag such as #ad at 23:35 UTC on 30 Oct 2026. Checked 23:35 UTC

## What briefs require

Share of 561 live clipping briefs we read that ask for each item. One brief often asks for several.

**What live clipping briefs require of a post**

|  |  |
| --- | --- |
| Brand @mention | 25% |
| Link in bio | 21% |
| Required sound | 14% |
| Generic ad tag | 4% |
| Brand partner tag | 2% |
| App's paid label | 2% |
| Disclosure on video | under 1% |

The generic tags they name most are #ad (18 campaigns), #paidpartnership (4 campaigns), #sponsored (3 campaigns) and #advertisement (1 campaign).

## Two kinds of words

A clip's text has two parts. The fixed part is whatever the brief requires: mentions, hashtags, a disclosure, a link in bio, sometimes text on the video. Copy it from the brief word for word. The free part is the hook and the line around it, and that is where ChatGPT or Claude earns its keep.

Keep the two apart in every prompt. A model that is asked to write the whole caption will shorten, reorder or invent tags. A model that writes only the free part, with the fixed part pasted after, cannot.

## Three prompts

### Hooks

```
You write hooks for short vertical clips. The clip shows: [what happens in the moment]. The brief's rules: [paste the rules]. Write 5 hooks of at most 8 words each. Each must make sense with the sound off, must not promise anything the clip does not show and must follow the rules. Number them.
```

### Caption

```
Write a caption for this clip for [TikTok, Instagram or YouTube Shorts]. Hook: [the hook I picked]. Required, word for word: [the tags, mentions and disclosure from the brief]. Put the disclosure where the brief says, else first. Keep it under 150 characters before the tags. No claims about money, health or results.
```

### Rule check

```
Check this caption and on-screen text against the brief's rules below. List every rule it breaks, every required tag or mention that is missing or misspelled, and anything the brief rules out. Say PASS only if nothing is wrong. Rules: [paste the rules]. Caption: [paste the caption].
```

Run the check in a new chat, so the model reads the caption cold. With ClippingAlpha connected, ask for get\_brief on the campaign instead of pasting the rules, and plan\_clips gives each clip's moment with a hook idea to start from. The [clip planning](https://clippingalpha.com/learn/plan-clips-from-a-brief-with-ai) guide covers picking the moment itself.

## What makes a hook

- It is on screen in the first 2 seconds, while the speaker's first line plays.
- It reads with the sound off, since many people watch muted.
- It promises only what the clip shows. A bait hook gets the clip rejected or skipped.
- It sits clear of the app's buttons and caption area, in the middle of the frame.
- It never names a figure, a result or a claim the brief does not make itself.

Clips cut on our [server](https://clippingalpha.com/learn/cut-clips-with-ai) already carry captions of what is said, so the hook text is the one layer you add.

## Common questions

### Can ChatGPT or Claude write my clip captions?

Yes, with 3 prompts: one for hooks, one for the caption, and one that checks the caption against the brief. Paste the brief's rules into each one, the model cannot see them otherwise.

### Which tags do clipping campaigns require?

25% of 561 live clipping briefs ask for the brand's @mention, 4% for a generic tag such as #ad, #paidpartnership and #sponsored and 2% for a brand partner tag at 23:35 UTC on 30 Oct 2026.

### Where does #ad go in a clip caption?

Where the brief says. 6 of 561 briefs we read want the disclosure at the start of the caption and 2 want it on the video itself.

### How long should a clip hook be?

Short enough to say in the first 2 seconds. The plans we build open each clip on its first spoken line with no lead in, and the hook text sits on screen at the same time.

### Should I let AI choose the hashtags?

Only the free ones. Copy the required tags and mentions from the brief word for word, then let the model add 2 or 3 topical tags if the brief allows extra tags.
